Twenty-three miles of hard-packed sand, racing history, a historic university, and — just south — the quieter riverside pocket of South Daytona.
Daytona Beach was founded by Mathias Day in 1870 and incorporated in 1876, but its legend was built on sand — packed so hard you can still drive on the beach in many spots. That firm sand made Daytona the birthplace of American speed: early racers set records on the beach itself, a tradition that grew into NASCAR and the Daytona International Speedway, where the Daytona 500 still runs every February.
There’s far more to the city than racing. Daytona is home to Bethune-Cookman University, founded by educator and civil-rights pioneer Mary McLeod Bethune, plus a beachside Boardwalk and pier that have drawn families for generations. Just to the south, South Daytona offers a calmer, more affordable riverside neighborhood with the same easy access to the water.
