A revived, brick-lined historic downtown on Lake Monroe — a foodie and antiquing district that doubles as the bridge between the coast and metro Orlando.
Sanford sits at the southern edge of the region, on the shores of Lake Monroe. Founded in the 1870s by Henry Shelton Sanford, it grew into the “Celery City” — a steamboat and railroad hub shipping produce up the St. Johns River. That history left behind a walkable, brick-lined downtown of historic storefronts, now revived into one of the area’s liveliest dining and antiquing districts.
Sanford is also a true gateway: the Orlando Sanford International Airport and the northern terminus of Amtrak’s Auto Train are both here, making it a natural bridge between the coast, metro Orlando, and the rest of the country. (Sanford sits just south of Volusia, in Seminole County.)
